Always an Option – Newsletter Sample

Hi everyone,

We’ve been working really hard on getting the newsletter together, and we’re presenting our first sample issue here.  This is exclusively for members, so please don’t  distribute it.  The newsletter is in Adobe PDF format; if you can’t open the file you’ll need to grab the reader here.

Download Always an Option 1:1

The newsletter features picks and trade updates from Phil, an energy report from Zman, an educational article from OptionSage, technical analysis picks from HappyTrading, and an iron condor experiment from me.

We’re very keen to get feedback and criticism, so please let us know what you like and dislike and if you have ideas for future improvements.  You can leave comments here or email them directly.

Thanks,
Jared

In general, the newsletter must decide which member type it is predominately seeking to attract, and whether it’s purpose will be a quick analysis of prior trades and those suggested for members to explore in the future, or an educational tool for teaching and explaining option theories (with real world trades for examples), or both (possibly broken into two sections within the monthly newsletter) as long as the writing style is adjusted accordingly.

For example, (Please don’t take any statements as condemnation or personal attack (I am not very talented at being PC at times) as I thought it was a good first issue!) in the iron condor discussion the contract strike prices were given but nothing defining which were long/short or puts/calls. A new member or novice trader may not be able to garner the education provided without better labeling of the mechanics behind the 4 transactions.

I personally would have liked to have a summary or list of calculations or equations at the end of the optionsage article. I actually ended up cutting and pasting the equations for risk, reward and adjusted cost basis so I didn’t have to scroll back up when rethinking a calculation. Possibly a cumulative glossary of equations or terms could be implemented for easy/future reference by the Members?

    All-in-all, great work gentlemen!!

Hi Phil, Optionsage, Zmann, Happy, Jared

Great newsletter. Personally, I would really like to see a section on blown trades and an evaluation on whether to walk away or repair. Recovery tactics have been one of the most useful learnings from this site and since we all blow trades, I think it will build confidence and skills in all readers. It would also help distinguish you from the other promo-porn newsletters that selectively only report winning trades.

    Great Job all.

Looks like a lot of house cleaning yesterday. I am ready for some new plays.
Nice call on OIL yesterday, thinking it would pop today.

According to the WSJ, the Altria Group (MO) Philip Morris unit is preparing for a tectonic change – regulation of tobacco by the FDA. With Democrats in charge of Congress, the long-debated step appears more likely than ever. A Senate bill is expected to clear a key committee next month, and companion legislation has been introduced in the House. Both bills would give the FDA broad sway over tobacco products, including the power to set product standards, which could include limiting certain ingredients in cigarettes. Tobacco makers would have to turn over to the agency extensive information about their products. The bills also dangle a potentially lucrative opportunity. They say that if a new kind of cigarette can be scientifically proven to “significantly reduce harm” to smokers, and its availability would also benefit the health of “the population as a whole,” the cigarette’s marketing claims may win approval from the FDA. Philip Morris, which is working on a slew of new products it hopes might qualify for FDA-approved health claims, acknowledges it must transform itself into a credible player in the expected scientific debates at the FDA. So the co is trying to emulate an industry already under the agency’s purview, the drug co’s. The co has a number of highly engineered products in the works, all of which are designed to possibly reduce tobacco’s dangers.

Great job – you guys are going create yourself a lot of work to keep that level of quality on weekly basis

    My 2 cents :
    - Great name/title – especially with the domain name
    - Trade explanations are great
    - portfolio tracking (10k in newsletter) , while it would probably attract readers is going to be very frustrating for everyone (as we see on the site , it is impossible to follow someone’s option trade). LTP would be the exception
    - energy report section , I did not read it all the details (sorry zman) – the energy sector just disgust me – but again the explanation
on the paired trade is awesome
    - I truly enjoyed the AMZN section – unlike others , I thought the layout was good , (summing of the trades in the boxes)
    - TA – I know that is not the point of TA but a little supporting fundamental facts would help here , like what makes CEPH having an up momentum , why isn t it about to collapse ? – by the way what does that company do ?
    - SPY vs SPX – may be it is my geek side but I think this kind of experiment is a great idea – especiallty over the long run

As a reader , I would like to see trade follow up on the subsequent newsletters – (AMZN , VLO , TM …) – not for everything but what pick/strategy worked or did not work and why.

I will definitely consider subscribing when you guys are live.
