Bears at Work as AMAG Pharmaceuticals Shares Head Lower

www.interactivebrokers.com

Today’s tickers: AMAG, BID, ERIC, BAX, NVDA, VIT, BVF & ETFC

AMAG – AMAG Pharmaceuticals, Inc. – Safety concerns surrounding AMAG’s Feraheme, the biopharmaceutical firm’s intravenous iron-replacement therapy for patients with chronic kidney disease and its lead product, continue to drive shares to new lows. Shares are down 4.00% at $18.15 as of 3:20 pm ET, but earlier plunged 11.6% to touch down at an intraday- and 4-year low of $16.70. Today’s low of $16.70 put shares down 68.2% since January 12, 2010, when the stock was trading up at its 52-week high of $52.49. Erosion in the price of AMAG’s shares accelerated at the end of August when the FDA added Feraheme to a list of products touting serious risks and connected the drug to unspecified serious cardiac disorders. One options investor appears to be positioning for shares to continue to decline by enacting a ratio put spread in the October contract. The trader purchased approximately 2,500 puts at the October $18 strike for premium of $1.98 each, and sold roughly 5,000 puts at the lower October $16 strike at a premium of $0.84 apiece. Average net premium paid to establish the spread amounts to $0.30 per contract. Thus, the strategist stands ready to profit if AMAG’s shares slip beneath the effective breakeven price of $17.70 by expiration. Maximum potential profits of $1.70 per contract are available to the trader if AMAG shares fall 11.85% from the current price of $18.15 to settle at $16.00 at expiration. The ratio of twice as much sold puts as long puts held by the investor expose him to losses should shares collapse below the effective lower breakeven price of $14.30 by expiration day next month.

BID – Sotheby’s, Inc. – Shares of the auctioneer fine art, antiques and other collectibles rallied as much as 7.65% this afternoon to touch an intraday high of $35.86. One options investor bought call options back in August and was well positioned to book profits on today’s rally. It looks like the trader originally purchased some 1,000 calls at the October $35 strike at an average premium of $0.90 each back on August 11, 2010, when BID’s shares were trading at a volume-weighted average price of $29.41. Shares have since increased significantly, boosting premium on the October $35 strike calls. Thus, the bullish player was able to sell all 1,000 lots at that strike for a premium…

Bears Binge on Put Options as Diamond Offshore Drilling, Inc. Shares Nosedive

www.interactivebrokers.com

Today’s tickers: DO, GAP, RIG, WMS, IMA, BAX, IGT, CAT, CCJ, CVS & WM

DO – Diamond Offshore Drilling, Inc. – Shares of the world’s largest U.S. deep-water oil driller fell as much as 7.6% to an intraday low and new 52-week low of $54.70 after businessinsider.com reported the firm’s Ocean Saratoga rig is leaking crude into the Gulf of Mexico. Goldman Sachs’ ratings cut of Diamond Offshore shares to ‘sell’ from ‘neutral’, as well as a downgrade to ‘underperform’ from ‘market perform’ with a 12-month target share price of $54.00 at FBR Capital Markets, also helped drive the stock lower today. Bearish options investors populated the stock with pessimistic plays, buying near-term put options and selling calls in the June contract. Traders expecting Diamond’s shares to continue to decline purchased 1,200 now in-the-money puts at the June $58.63 strike for an average premium of $4.07 apiece. Investors holding these contracts profit if shares trade beneath the average breakeven price of $54.56 by June expiration. Buying interest spread to the lower June $54.88 strike where 1,100 puts were picked up for an average premium of $2.26 each. Another 1,100 puts were purchased at the June $53.63 strike for a premium of $1.82 per contract. Finally, uber-bearish players coveted 1,600 put options at the lower June $49.88 strike by paying an average premium of $0.92 apiece. Shares of the underlying stock must plunge 10.5% from the current intraday low of $54.70 before June $49.88 strike put buyers start to garner profits beneath the average breakeven price of $48.96. Investors not expecting Diamond’s shares to rally ahead of June expiration sold short 1,300 calls at the June $61.75 strike to pocket an average premium of $0.61 per contract. The premium is safe in call-sellers’ wallets as long as shares of the underlying stock trade below $61.75 through expiration day. Options implied volatility on Diamond Offshore Drilling is up 15.1% to 59.94% as of 3:10 pm (ET). Earlier implied volatility surged roughly 18% to 61.42%, DO’s highest reading of volatility in at least one year.

GAP – Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., Inc. – Investors bought put options on the operator of conventional supermarkets, combination food and drug stores and discount food stores today with shares of the underlying stock trading lower by 4.45% to stand at $4.08 as of 2:38 pm (ET). Pessimistic traders expecting GAP’s shares to continue to decline…

Two Week Wrap-Up – Trading Our Range

Your "crystal ball" was dead-on with the insights into the report on jobs as well as the initial rise and then correction. Truly impressive.  – Champstar2

We didn’t have a weekly wrap-up last week because of the holiday.

In our Nov 21st Wrap-Up, I had said next week we’ll be watching to see if we can get more bullish above our 25% lines at: Dow 10,250, S&P 1,100, Nasdaq 2,187, NYSE 7,000 and Russell 600 and that became the bottom of our new range while I sent out a 9:41 Alert to our Members on Nov 23rd sticking with our upside targets of Dow 10,471, S&P 1,113, Nas 2,205, NYSE 7,266 and Russell 605.  That has been a very reliable range to play for the past two weeks and we’ve been having a good time playing both ends of it.

Rather than just wrapping up this week’s moves, I thought we’d add the prior week as the pattern is very much the same (and it was the same the week before) so it certainly bears (oops, don’t say bears!) studying.  Of course, when I talk about patterns, I don’t just mean the chart pattern where we have all of our gains for the week on Monday and Tuesday on low volume and then larger volume selling for the rest of the week as the funds who pump the futures up dump their ill-gotten gains on retail investors.  I’m talking about the global new patterns, as reported by the MSM, that make this sort of manipulation so effective.  It’s not that I’m so good at predicting things – it’s really just that I’m good at spotting the BS…

Monday - Stuffing the Futures for Thanksgiving

I was pointing out that morning that 90% of the market gains since October had been coming on a single day each week and how a lot of that was happening in the very thinly-traded Futures market, where a few thousand shares traded overnight are able to lever the entire US market up by Trillions of Dollars.  It’s a very sick and broken system that has been seized by manipulators to yank investors around, making sure retail investors have little ability to participate in these wild market moves as the game is already over by the time trading starts the next day

This week, we had 2 days like that with both Tuesday and Friday gapping up over 100 points…

A Vault for Valero Means Call Option Feeding-Frenzy as Expiration Nears

www.interactivebrokers.com

Today’s tickers: VLO, NTRI, EFA, BAX & WFC

VLO - We can explain in part the activity in the September 20 strike call options, which is due to expire at the weekend. That’s straight forward. It’s now in the money following a 9% share price gain to $20.97. Investors have possibly built up a substantial short position at the start of August in the expectation that share would remain below $20 as they have since they collapsed on June 2. Selling short the calls means they stand to retain the premium if the stock price remains south of the border. We see little news to set off today’s enthusiasm for Valero, but the rally that has put the calls into the money has the potential to spark a significant amount of short covering. Options open interest here is around 33,000 while today’s volume is at around 29,000. Expiration Friday tomorrow should be fun. – Valero Energy Corp. –

NTRI - The weight management products and services firm, which offers portion-controlled pre-packaged meals that can apparently satisfy ex-NFL quarterback Dan Marino’s appetite, edged onto our ‘hot by options volume’ market scanner this morning. Shares of NTRI have surged more than 6% today to $15.84, inspiring bullish options action in the October contract. It appears some 3,200 calls were purchased at the October 17.5 strike for an average premium of 25 cents per contract. Investors will begin to accumulate profits if shares of the weight management company rally 12% higher to breach the breakeven point at $17.75 by expiration next month. The rise in demand for options on NTRI helped fuel the 24% burst in option implied volatility on the stock from an intra-day low of 41% to a high of 51%. – NutriSystem Inc. –

EFA - Shares of the exchange traded fund representing stocks from Europe, Australasia, and the Far East have come off slightly today to stand less than 0.25% lower at $55.78. Perhaps fearing further bearish movement in the stock, investors coveted approximately 25,000 puts at the October 53 strike for an average premium of 73 cents apiece. Traders picking up the put options may currently hold long positions in the underlying stock meaning a 6% decline for shares of the EFA would be protected by put option exposure and that would kick in beneath the breakeven price of $52.27. – iShares MSCI EAFE Index ETF –

BAX - “Swine Flu”…

Uranium company sees calendar call spread

www.interactivebrokers.com

Today’s tickers: CCJ, BAX, XHB, T, VIX, PCP, PG, JNJ, HIG & USO

CCJ Cameco Corporation – The producer of commercial-use uranium to fuel nuclear power plants has experienced a share price decline of about 4.5% to $17.08. According to one news source, uranium-oxide concentrate for immediate delivery rose 2.5% or $1, to $41.50 per pound last week, although uranium spot prices have declined by more than 26% since December 1, 2008. Additionally, trading last week jumped to more than 4.3 million pounds up from just 2.2 million pounds in the first three months of the year. CCJ edged onto our ‘hot by option volume’ market scanner after one investor initiated a calendar spread. Perhaps with revived demand for uranium and trading volume for the commodity on the rise, this investor is hoping that CCJ’s share price will receive a boost in the next six months. The trader purchased 7,500 calls at the September 22.5 strike price for an average premium of 52 cents per contract. The long call position was funded by the sale of 7,500 calls at the January 2010 22.5 strike price for 1.15 apiece. The investor receives a credit of 63 cents on the trade and is hoping shares rally through $22.50 by expiration as he would then be able to exercise the call options and take delivery of the underlying shares. The fact that the sooner-to-expiration September calls have a higher gamma means that its premium will rise faster for a given rally in the underlying share price. On the flip side, the investor could see the credit pocketed today erode if the calls fail to land in-the-money by expiration in September. We’re unsure what the investor will do with this strategy should shares rally but not far enough to allow September exercise – an event that would leave him short of calls after expiration.

BAX Baxter International, Inc. – Shares have dipped by about 1.5% to $50.95 for BAX, a company that develops, manufactures, and markets products that aid persons with hemophilia, immune disorders, infectious diseases and other chronic and acute medical conditions. A complex combination trade took place that grabbed our attention, but the trade is likely marked inaccurately on the exchange. The trade shows the sale of twice as many calls purchased, which makes little sense and so we’ll describe the way we think the trade went. Using the May contract…

Jobless claims improve while leading indicators decline in today’s economic report card

by Wall Street Sector Selector Staff

Weekly jobless claims declined to 424,000 from last week’s 432, 000 but stubbornly stayed above the all important 400,000 level for another week.

Good news came from July Home Prices which rose to +0.8% from the previously reported +0.7%.

But the biggest economic news of the week came yesterday when the Federal Reserve said it saw  “significant downside risks to the economic outlook, including strains in global financial markets.”

Global stock markets responded negatively yesterday an...

Fukushima Explosion Update: Core Presumed Intact As Sea Water Used To Bring Temperature Down, Radiation Level At 1015 Microsieverts/Hour

Courtesy of Tyler Durden

The damage control to the Fukushima explosion reported earlier is coming fast and furious. According to CNN, "the explosion at an earthquake-damaged nuclear plant was not caused by damage to the nuclear reactor but by a pumping system that failed as crews tried to bring the reactor's temperature down, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said Saturday. The next step for workers at the Fukushima Daiichi plant will be to flood the reactor containment structure with sea water to bring the reactor's temperature down to safe levels, he said. The effort is expected to take two days." While the government is trying to play down the threat from the explosion, it has nonetheless double the evacuation zone radius from 10 to 20 kilometers: "Radiation levels have fallen since the explosion and there is no immediate danger, Edano said. But authorities were nevertheless expanding the evacuation ...

The Mega-Bear Quartet and L-Shaped "Recoveries"

Note from dshort: I retired this chart series last summer in deference to my prefered inflation-adjusted series that aligns the S&P 500 2000 high with the Nikkei peak in 1989. However, I continue to receive requests for this version, despite the "V" shape of the the recovery since the March 2009 low. This chart series overlays the current S&P 500 with the L-shaped "recoveries" after the Dow Crash of 1929, the Nikkei 225 after Japan's 1989 bubble, and the post Tech Bubble NASDAQ. Biotech Junkies Update and Momenta Pharma Moving Forward

February is now past, and the Biotech Porfolio is loaded with winners and a miss (PLX).  MRK is down a bit, but I expect that trade to recover, and one could be more agressive and double down on it, or play another round at the Jan13 $30 options for roughly the same price.  Below is the summary, and note the grey boxes are ones that did not fill.  I am still a fan of BMRN, and like DEPO as well.  Now let's look at a few others.

Table 1.  PSW Biotech Plays Since January 2011

Our newest play is Momenta Pharmaceuticals (MNTA), who is pursuing a three-part business model which includes complex generic equivalents in partnership with the Sandoz division of Novartis, proprietary compounds, and follow-on- biologics (FOB).  It seems that this company is tied up in competition/litigation wit...
